Small aircraft plows into sand during emergency landing on NY beach

The pilot and passengers escaped injury when a single-engine Cessna plane made an emergency landing on a New York beach Wednesday evening.

Video footage shows the Cessna 152 landing on Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, Long Island, around 7:30 p.m. as the sun sank below the horizon.

The plane glided across the sand, spinning its propellers slowly until its wheels touched down before continuing, passing a walking couple who looked on in amazement.

The Cessna then comes to a screeching halt as its nose sinks into the sand and its tail suddenly flips up into the air, exposing the underbelly of the plane.

Fortunately, the 60-year-old pilot and 59-year-old passenger walked away without injury, according to ABC 7.

The pilot reported experiencing an engine failure before the plane touched down on shore.

It is unclear where they were traveling or which airport they took off from.

The beach is 24 miles from Long Island’s nearest airport, but there are several other smaller airstrips along the south coast, according to the New York Post.

The FAA said it is investigating the incident.

Records show the plane made a similar emergency landing eight years ago at Sunken Meadow State Park, about 25 miles from Cedar Beach.

Pilot Robert Kelety was teaching first-time students to fly at 3,000 feet when the plane’s engine failed, CBS2 reported at the time. The two crash-landed, but both walked away unharmed.

Back in 1987, a student pilot making his first cross-country flight in the same Cessna got lost and landed safely in a field in North Carolina, records show.
