Valuable $1 Coin Sparks Interest Among Australians

Australians are being encouraged to search for a specific dollar coin that bears a small mark, which significantly increases its worth. The monetary value of these coins can fluctuate depending on rarity and defects in production.

In 2019, a special edition of the dollar coin was launched, with a limited run of only a few thousand produced. Coin collector Michael Macquarie mentioned in a video that discovering this coin might allow you to afford a stay at a decent hotel.

“If you spot that envelope mark on the coin, it could be worth between $249 and $295,” he noted.

The selling prices for these coins can vary widely. One site has recently listed a sale for $275, while another put one up for $399. Additionally, eBay listings have shown prices as high as $599.95.

There were actually two different versions of this coin released six years ago.

The 2019 $1 COIN HUNT A ENVELOPE PRIVY showcases Elizabeth II on one side, and the other side features an image of the Australian Post Office bike, along with a small envelope placed next to the letter “A.”

Designed to commemorate 25 years since Australia Post’s first cover release in 1994, the coin set consisted of 7,500 to 14,500 units, aimed primarily at collectors.

According to Sterling Currency, the coin is considered highly collectible and is part of a broader series issued by the Mint.

This type of coin has become a hot item in the coin collecting community. Only a few “Australian Post” coins with envelope marks were randomly included in several sets sold, alongside various Postal Cargo Covers.

The Royal Australian Mint has also put out a collection of $1 coins that represent the entire alphabet, showcasing unique Australian themes, places, and names. This initiative has been dubbed the Great Australian Coin Hunt, reflecting the country’s iconic history.

In total, the Royal Australian Mint has issued over $500,000 worth of $1 coins without the special envelope mark, which are considerably less valuable, typically selling for between $2.50 and $8.
