The man who shot and killed Super 8 hotel employees and guests in a small Minnesota town appears to have no connection to the victims, authorities said.

Officials also said a toxicology report found methamphetamine in Reneas’ blood, which may have impaired him during the shooting.

Police responded to the shooting and found hotel employee Shelby Trettel, 22, shot near the front desk. The other victim, Patrick Jeffrey Roers, 35, of Deer River, was shot in his car parked on the hotel lot.
Rheneas and Roers were both guests at the motel.
Authorities issued an alert that night about an active shooter at the hotel and warned people in the area around Big Lake Road and Highway 33 to shelter in place.
