Tragic Loss of Young Texan Girl Embraced by Rival Schools

A nine-year-old girl from Texas, part of the 27 campers and counselors who tragically lost their lives in flash floods on July 4, was honored by TCU and SMU at a game on Saturday before her parents, Alma Mattel, played.

In a joint social media tribute, both schools reflected on Lila Bonner’s vibrant spirit and her passion for animals through a dedicated foundation aimed at saving them and promoting kindness.

“Lila was truly at the center of our divided household,” one message stated. “Wearing TCU purple alongside SMU red and blue embodied her family’s mixed loyalties, as her father Blake is an alumnus of TCU and her mother Caitlin graduated from SMU.”

There was a poignant reminder of how Lila’s essence, like the colors she adored, brought everyone together in memory of her.

She tragically drowned when the Guadalupe River overflowed, sweeping through the Texas Hill Country women’s summer camp.

This month’s destructive floods in Texas have taken the lives of at least 136 people, damaging homes and vehicles in the process.

During the game, Lila’s family, including her parents and two sisters, were seen together. This matchup was particularly historic, marking a rivalry that dates back to 1915.

“We’ve been bringing our girls to TCU games since they were little,” Caitlyn Bonner shared on the field, affectionately referring to Lila as a “super fan.” She emphasized how special the school held a place in their hearts.

“There’s no one else quite like her,” she added, reflecting the unique position Lila held.

The social media messages continued, urging everyone to honor the memory of Lila, who radiated love for both teams and joy for those around her.

“Let’s remember that even amidst rivalries, we can unite for a cause greater than the game,” the post concluded, also highlighting her foundation, “The Light of Lila.”
