Snapchat Turns Off Controversial Feature Fueling Teen Anxiety

Snapchat has adjusted its “Solar System” feature to turn it off by default in response to recent criticism and concerns about its potential negative impact on teens’ mental health and relationships. tech crunch report Snapchat, a popular social media platform loved by teenagers, has come under increased scrutiny following recent incidents. wall street journal The report highlighted how the “solar system” feature is contributing to increased anxiety among teenagers. The feature, available to paid subscribers, ranks users based on their proximity to their Snapchat friends, using celestial bodies like Mercury for close friends and Uranus for distant friends.

As Breitbart News previously reported:

Callie dealt with a boyfriend who was upset when she realized that he ranked lower than one of her male friends.

Parents and experts have expressed concern about the impact such features will have on mental health. “We have to wonder if fear of being left out is part of the mental health issues these kids are facing,” said Erica Bates, Curry’s mother. US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has warned of the impact of social media on adolescents, noting that they are especially vulnerable to peer pressure and social comparison.

In a newsroom post on Friday, Snap acknowledged the feedback and said, “We have heard and understand that the solar system could make such moods even worse, and we want to avoid that.” ” he said. However, rather than removing this feature completely, the company chose to make it an opt-in option for Snapchat+ subscribers.

Snap defended the feature, claiming it provides “additional awareness and context” for users who want to know more about their friendships. The company also notes that less than 0.25 percent of the Snapchat community uses the Solar System feature. However, critics argue that this low percentage is not surprising, given that this feature is only available to paid subscribers.

This isn’t the first time Snapchat has faced criticism for a feature that could have unintended consequences. The app’s “Streaks” feature, which facilitates daily communication between users, has been debated for its potential addiction and psychological harm. In response, Snap introduced the ability to pause and restore Streak last year.
