George Lucas’ Museum of Narrative Art Set to Open

This fall, George Lucas’ much-anticipated $1 billion Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles will welcome visitors to an imaginative space featuring Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder among other memorable Star Wars vehicles.

On September 22nd, the Lucas Museum will finally open its doors, introducing the public to what promises to be a remarkable attraction in Exposition Park. Reports suggest that there will be around 20 inaugural exhibitions spread across more than 30 galleries.

Star Wars enthusiasts can look forward to diving deep into the aesthetics of vehicles, dazzling ships, props, costumes, and illustrations from the first six movies within an exhibit called Star Wars in Motion.

This showcase will display notable items such as the original landspeeder from Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope and General Grievous’ wheeled bike from Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

However, the museum aims to transcend mere homage to a distant galaxy.

Co-founded by Lucas and his wife, Melody Hobson, the museum occupies a futuristic 300,000-square-foot space across 11 acres. Its collection is quite impressive, boasting over 100,000 square feet of gallery space filled with more than 1,200 pieces selected from an extensive founding collection of over 40,000 items.

Lucas describes this collection as “the people’s art,” highlighting the museum’s goal of narrating stories through various mediums, including comics, cartoons, and renowned films.

The opening exhibitions will also delve into central human themes such as family, community, work, and adventure, showcasing artists like Norman Rockwell and Frank Frazetta.

A museum release notes that the exhibitions aim to “trace the evolution of human culture through storytelling,” drawing connections from ancient sculptures to modern film.

Many exhibits will be thematically organized, emphasizing shared narratives of love, family, and adventure that resonate across generations. The aim? To highlight how these enduring stories define our collective human experience.

The opening comes after nearly a decade of planning and postponements, with Lucas first revealing his intentions back in 2017. Finally, it’s ready to debut on September 22, 2026.
