Controversial Comments from Streamer Ignite Online Debate
A streamer with over a million followers on a notable online platform recently stirred up controversy by quoting Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who had previously made provocative claims about Muslims taking over New York City.
Suniko, a well-known figure in the online space, shouted “Allah Akbar!” to a group of Egyptian soccer fans while celebrating amidst drums and chanting. The scene was lively, with the crowd’s excitement spilling over as they waved the Egyptian flag.
Suniko, whose real name is Nicholas Ken de Balintaj, has cultivated a provocative online persona. Interestingly, he has distanced himself from far-right anti-Semitic circles, having previously been an ardent supporter of the political left, including Bernie Sanders’ presidential run in 2016. Notably, he reportedly converted to Islam in 2023.
The backlash began Friday night during a live broadcast on the video platform Kick, celebrating Egypt’s World Cup victory over Australia. Wiping away what seemed like tears, he remarked, “This is the Islamic Republic of New York Istan,” and continued with, “Islam will be in every home. Inshallah, the whole world will be Muslim.”
He playfully welcomed viewers to Mamdani’s New York, exclaiming the vibrant atmosphere while expressing a wish for others to experience a similar environment.
For context, “Inshallah” translates to “God’s will” in Arabic, while “Allahu Akbar” means “God is great.”
It’s worth noting that Mamdani serves as New York’s first Muslim mayor, a position that adds weight to these remarks.
Suniko’s video quickly circulated online, racking up millions of views on social media, with many users expressing outrage over his statements.
Among those critical of Suniko was Rob O’Neill, the Navy SEAL famously known for his role in Osama bin Laden’s capture, who remarked on the alarming tone of Suniko’s comments. The response was heated, with others, including conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, calling for serious repercussions against the streamer.
In a terse response, Elon Musk, the owner of the platform X, agreed with the deportation suggestion made by Jones.
This is particularly notable given Musk’s earlier hesitance to bring Jones back onto the platform following previous controversies. However, Musk eventually reversed that decision, which has led to heightened scrutiny now that controversial figures like Jones support Suniko’s punishment.
Online reactions continued to pour in, with one user labeling Suniko a “disgusting creature,” and others suggesting he might be better suited elsewhere if he harbors such sentiments against America.
In a somewhat cryptic turn of events, Suniko seemed to address the backlash in a Sunday night post, stating, “All knees buckle. Every tongue confesses.”
On Monday, he also took a jab at Musk for aligning with Jones, stating, “Go back to Africa,” referencing Musk’s South African roots.
As for Mayor Mamdani, his office has yet to comment on the remarks made by Suniko.
