SNL mocks Trump as Jesus in Easter sketch targeting economy and faith

“Saturday Night Live” took another swipe with President Donald Trump this weekend, drawing out the latest cold-open and bold comparison between Trump and Jesus.

“Your favorite president, Donald Jesus Trump, is me, comparing myself to the Son of God again,” said cast member James Austen Johnson, revising his role as an exaggerated Trump.

The sketch was opened with dramatization of biblical scenes. Jesus flips the table in the temple on a merchant selling the goods. But just a few seconds later, Trump hijacks the scene with a monologue, repeating this week's financial headline with his usual bravery.

“A lot of people call me the Messiah,” he says.

He then relaxes to stock prices in a revival of his recent roller coaster. “That's true, the stock market did yes. It died. And the third day was resurrected. And on the fourth day it died again.

The show didn't stop there. The sketch also addressed a nod to growing inflation, particularly egg prices, both Easter traditions and economic concerns.

“We love Easter, we love bunnies. We love hunting eggs just like everyone does at the grocery store now.

He added, “I thought that was the purpose of the entire campaign, but I can't break it.”

The real Trump has been tackling the surge in egg prices in his joint speech to Congress last month, denounced President Biden and promised to “make America affordable again,” but the SNL version questioned not only his economic policy, but his religious credibility.

“Easter Mass is always packed, right? And do you know what's sad? Some people only go to church at Christmas and Easter,” says the fake Trump.

“It's not me! I didn't go back then either.”

The monologue was wrapped in the final Easter punch line. “Remember the lessons Jesus taught during Easter's most sacred season: we must not mix religion with commerce.”
