Saturday Night Live Recap
As Saturday Night Live wrapped up its 50th season, it returned to popular forms and featured James Austin Johnson reviving his memorable impression of Donald Trump. This time, he tackled Trump’s recent visit to the Middle East, crafting a comedic bromance with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
In the sketch, Johnson’s Trump enthusiastically described his travels through Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. He and Emil Wakim, portraying MBS, exchanged affectionate terms like “habibi” while joking about trade agreements and some questionable gifts.
Trump declared they were on the same wavelength, expressing his admiration for everything Saudi Arabia offers. “I’m a huge fan of everything from oil to money… and everything in between,” he asserted.
He quickly reassured viewers that the trip was not entirely self-serving. “I didn’t do this for myself. It’s important to clarify. I did this for the American people, although, yes, my personal enrichment was also part of it.” His honesty offered a humorous touch.
One particularly surreal moment came when he boasted about a new plane he received. “I did really well on this trip. They gave me a $400 million plane. Crazy, right? People are saying it’s a bribe.”
Wakim’s MBS quipped, “Well, it’s not exactly that yet.” Johnson quickly retorted, “It’s pre-bribe, definitely pre-bribe.”
This led to a humorous segue about American aviation struggles. “But seriously, I should be flying an American plane now. No thanks! Have you heard what’s happening? The radar is down, the screen is just blank. Newark!”
Trump also touched on new international deals, prompting MBS to share exciting news. “Saudi Arabia will purchase a billion dollars worth of aircraft from Boeing,” Wakim’s MBS announced.
“Your funeral,” Johnson chimed back humorously.
Reflecting on the trip, Johnson’s Trump likened it to a Middle Eastern boys’ getaway. “I had an amazing time. I don’t think I saw a single woman. What’s going on there?”
As for the fashion, the segment ended on a surreal note, with Johnson leaving the show in March and alluding to a playful memo about a song by Morgan Warren.
Wakim’s MBS responded, “They have to love you. Farewell, they have to love you.”
The season finale featured Scarlett Johansson as the host and Bad Bunny as the musical guest. Johnson’s Trump concluded with a whimsical note, stating, “If there’s still a country, it’s a coin toss. Happy summer, everyone.”
