SNL Joke on Trump Administration Falls Flat

A “Saturday Night Live” joke linking the Trump administration to Nazis didn’t seem to connect with viewers over the weekend—perhaps it was too obscure or maybe just fell flat.

During the “Weekend Update” segment, host Colin Jost remarked that President Donald Trump is sending financial aid to Argentina, adding, “Because if history is any guide, a lot of Trump administration officials are going to end up fleeing to Argentina.” The response was somewhat muted, with a mix of quiet laughter and awkward silence from the audience. Jost, perhaps taken aback, prompted for applause with a casual, “Okay, clap,” quickly followed by, “Just kidding.”

There was an underlying reference to historical Nazi war criminals who escaped to Argentina after World War II through what was called the “Rat Line.”

The segment continued to poke fun at Trump and his allies. At one point, Jost humorously touched on Trump’s recent comment about possibly not entering heaven, suggesting he was “too busy here and running through hell.”

In another quip, the show made light of former Republican Rep. George Santos, whose seven-year prison sentence was recently commuted by Trump.

Jost also highlighted the outstanding performance of Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani, who pitched six shutout innings and hit three home runs in a single game, making history in the process.

Commenting on Santos, who had been imprisoned for felony identity theft and wire fraud, Jost remarked that this achievement was something only Santos could pull off.

Santos expressed gratitude on social media, thanking Trump for his “kindness” and “generosity.” He spoke about receiving, “a true second chance at life,” and acknowledged his faith and the support he received.
