Snowplow driver in Long Island saves two lost puppies during blizzard

A snow plow driver on Long Island rescued two lost dogs during a significant blizzard on Monday, as reported by various sources.

Kenny McGowan, who was clearing roads in Babylon, noticed two dogs—Harper and Heidi—running along Sunrise Highway amidst the intense snowstorm. According to CBS New York, he spotted them while driving.

“I turned around and caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye. Then, looking in the mirror, I realized it was a dog running,” McGowan, who works for the Department of Public Works, recounted.

“I immediately activated the siren and followed it,” he added.

“As an animal lover and a dad, I switched to protection mode right away… I was ready to do whatever it took to keep those dogs safe,” McGowan shared.

He parked his truck diagonally across the highway, using it as a barrier to shield the dogs and guide them to safety.

“They ended up stuck in about three feet of snow on the median,” he recalled. “One dog was lying down, and the other was on top of her; I recognized immediately that they were close, like family—sisters,” McGowan noted.

With help from Good Samaritans, he managed to lift the two lab mixes, who had escaped without their collars, and took them back to the snowplow before heading to the Babylon Animal Shelter.

“If no one had found them, they might have frozen,” said kennel attendant Danny Deutsch, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The shelter staff quickly scanned the dogs for microchips and successfully reunited them with their owners within a day.

Sisters Harper and Heidi were seen with Babylon Animal Shelter kennel attendants Angela Diangson and Danny Deutsch just before heading home. The circumstances of their escape from the house remain unclear.
