Socialist candidates supported by Mamdani win NYC Democratic primaries

NEW YORK CITY – The opening night in New York City has clearly defined political winners and losers, with Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s Socialist Party candidates outperforming establishment Democrats.

Winner: Mamdani

Mayor Mamdani, who took office in January, demonstrated his political strength as all three congressional candidates he endorsed—Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Dalializa Avila Chevalier—won during the primary Tuesday night. He is also expected to face off against his Republican opponent in November successfully.

These candidates shared a platform similar to Mamdani’s socialist economic policies, skepticism toward Israel, and opposition to immigration enforcement. They encountered opposition from candidates aligned with the Democratic establishment.

Rise of the far left: Mamdani-backed candidates oust Democratic Party establishment

“I think it was an unbelievable night,” Mamdani reflected on the outcomes, recalling the significant primary victory he achieved last June. “It was an incredible night, and I think New Yorkers demonstrated that last June was just the beginning.”

Loser: Incumbent Democratic Party

Democratic Congressman Adriano Espaillat, chair of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus and in the House since 2017, lost the Democratic primary for New York’s 13th Congressional District to Mamdani-backed socialist Dalializa Avila Chevalier.

Avila Chevalier, who has made controversial remarks such as calling America a “fucking disgrace” and advocating for the abolition of prisons and borders, won despite her provocative stance.

Another Democratic incumbent, Rep. Dan Goldman, also fell to a Mamdani-supported candidate, Brad Lander, a surprising outcome for someone regarded as a prominent anti-Trump voice in Congress. The campaign was increasingly shaped by discussions on Israel, with Lander criticizing Goldman for his military aid votes.

Winner: New York City Democratic Socialists of America

At least 12 candidates endorsed by the NYC-DSA triumphed across New York state, underscoring Mamdani’s backing of socialist policies within the party. Candidates like Avila Chevalier and Valdez have been part of DSA’s push for several progressive reforms, including defunding the police and condemning Israel’s actions.

Losers: Democratic leadership

Reactions on social media pointed out that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer face significant challenges moving forward.

“Democrats have officially become the party of Zolan, AOC, and Bernie,” noted Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, reflecting on the shifts shaping the Democratic narrative.

Jeffries previously stated that the Democratic Party’s future might dim compared to the accomplishments of its members nationwide.

Commenting on the primary results, FOX News Contributor Lisa Booth expressed skepticism about Schumer’s chances for re-election in 2028.

Supporters of Mamdani can be heard at Valdez’s election night celebration, chanting “You’re next” directed at Jeffries.

Jeremy Carle, a research fellow, commented that these election results exemplify broader ideological shifts occurring in New York City and across the nation. He suggested the increasing radicalism among the newly elected could pose challenges for Democratic leadership in the House.

“The future of the Democratic Party seems to be heading toward a more radical orientation,” Carle observed, emphasizing the attention these candidates could garner operating from a media hub like New York.
