Increase in Membership for Socialist Group Following Candidate Announcement
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have reported a surge in membership since New York State Representative Zoran Mamdani emerged as the likely Democratic candidate for the New York City mayoral election on Tuesday.
On Thursday, the DSA noted a significant influx of individuals becoming involved, particularly following the controversies surrounding former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. According to statements and social media posts from identified DSA members, this rise in interest aligns with conservative worries that Mamdani’s candidacy is reviving far-left organizations.
In an email addressed to its supporters, the DSA highlighted Mamdani’s role, stating, “Our democratic socialist and DSA member Zohran Mamdani is currently the candidate for mayor of the Democratic Party!” They further expressed that participation is now coming from various states, including Kansas, Florida, and Texas.
The DSA’s email noted, “Despite heavy rains and oppressive heat, NYC-DSA members and supporters nationwide have knocked on thousands of doors, made countless calls, and mobilized voters,” illustrating their grassroots efforts.
In response to DSA leadership posts, several users on X indicated that they joined the organization and shared membership confirmations. The DSA reported more than 1,300 new members nationwide, particularly in the days surrounding the election announcement.
Interestingly, the National and New York City chapters of the DSA did not respond to inquiries for comments on their membership growth.
The mayoral primary represents a significant struggle over Democratic ideologies. Mamdani, who is 33 years old, advocates leftist views on topics like criminal justice and the economy, as well as controversial international issues. The DSA historically includes figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, who are prominent lawmakers on the left.
However, the DSA has faced its own challenges, including internal disagreements on financial management that coincided with declining membership and the Trump presidency. Controversies also arose when some members expressed support for violent acts, such as the shootings of Israeli embassy workers, which the DSA stated did not reflect its official stance.
Notably, events like the death of George Floyd and the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade in 2022 previously catalyzed a boost in DSA membership. Now, as Mamdani looks toward election confirmations from New York City voters, the DSA perceives his candidacy as indicative of a “new political age.”
In their correspondence, the DSA asserted, “We have proven all founding Democratic leaders wrong. Only well-organized people inspired by the socialist vision of the future can combat fascism.” They believe this is merely the beginning of their resurgence.
