Zoran Mamdani, the socialist mayor of New York, has been promoting his vision for universal childcare, unveiling a new initiative that targets children as young as two.
“I also want to highlight what we announced recently—the expansion of pre-K and 3K opportunities for New Yorkers across the five boroughs,” said Mamdani.
“This announcement includes adding 2,000 new spots for 3K programs. We’re currently reaching out to parents in the city to encourage enrollment. We’re really proud of this investment in our childcare systems. This time, 85% of families got one of the top three 3K choices,” he added, noting that this also shortened average commute times for families by six blocks.
“Now, six blocks might not seem like a major distance, but trust me, when you’re walking with a toddler, it feels like a lot. We’re really enthusiastic about this initiative because we want universal childcare to be accessible in a practical way for New Yorkers,” he continued, emphasizing that he aims for universal childcare to be “easy to engage with.”
“It’s essential that there are quality programs in neighborhoods where kids can see what’s available and think, ‘That’s the program I want for my 3- or 4-year-old.’ For the first time, we’re also introducing this for 2-year-olds this summer,” he proudly mentioned.
However, it’s important for parents to know that Mamdani previously stated the city will not check the immigration status of children enrolled in the free childcare program. This means that the program also serves undocumented immigrants, funded by taxpayer money.
“Let me clarify: These programs are for all New Yorkers,” he said. “We’re not asking about children’s immigration status.”
“All these kids are New Yorkers,” he asserted, emphasizing the city’s status as a “sanctuary.” “They should be enrolled in 3K and pre-K, regardless of where they were born. We’re proud to be a sanctuary city.”
Earlier this year, Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul also revealed that four communities will have access to “free 2-K seats this fall,” which is being presented as a significant step toward universal childcare for children from 6 weeks to 5 years old.
Rachel, a popular YouTuber focused on children’s education and known for her left-leaning perspectives, also voiced her support for the city’s initiatives in childcare.
“Miss Rachel,” whose full name is Rachel Griffin Acaso, has expressed opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on her social media, encouraging adults to create paper dolls for children detained at the Dilley Immigration Detention Center. She asked parents to use the hashtag #freefamilies and press lawmakers to end the “cruel policy of family detention.”
Mamdani also enlisted the help of rapper Cardi B to help promote his childcare agenda.
