Solar eclipse 2024: 8 strange things that could happen during the rare event

Rare events in orbit can cause some strange events here on Earth.

The North American solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 is expected to be a total solar eclipse in 15 U.S. states.

What can Americans expect to happen not only on the ground but also in the air?

Here are eight strange things that can happen during a solar eclipse.

1. Bailey Beads

Bailey beads are a strange effect that occurs when the moon approaches the sun during a solar eclipse.

This phenomenon, which is a streak of light that appears at the edge of a solar eclipse when viewed safely with appropriate glasses, is often referred to as the diamond ring effect.

Dr. Bill Blair, an astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University, said viewers may be able to see this “interesting edge effect” in the same way that the moon obscures or begins to obscure the sun. he told Fox News Digital.

“In a phenomenon known as ‘Bailey’s Bead’… the Sun can actually follow the Moon’s edge, pass through the Moon’s valleys, and reach the summit,” he said.

Blair suggested that eclipse viewers can maximize their chances of seeing such an effect by moving along the “edge” of the total eclipse zone.

2. Animal behavior

meanwhile solar eclipsewildlife species reacted as if day had suddenly turned into night.

Due to the solar eclipse on April 8, some schools in the U.S. will be closed that day

According to the University of Dallas, local animals and birds often “prepare for sleep or exhibit disorganized behavior” during a solar eclipse.

National Geographic noted in an article that both the physical and auditory behavior of animals changes during a solar eclipse.

“An early onset of darkness disrupts animals’ circadian rhythms, and depending on where you view the eclipse, it can trigger a chorus of hooting owls, chirping crickets, and even coyotes,” NatGeo is writing.

Because of this expected change in sound, NASA announced the Solar Eclipse Soundscapes Project, urging eclipse observers to pay attention and record differences in animal behavior in the area.

For solar eclipse safety, here’s what drivers shouldn’t do on the road during the rare event

“Reports of abnormal behavior in these animals date back centuries, but the effects of solar eclipses on plants and animals are not fully understood,” NASA said in the article.

“The NASA-funded Solar Eclipse Soundscapes project is a collaborative effort by the interested public to better understand how solar eclipses affect different ecosystems. Collecting the sights and sounds of the solar eclipse.”

3. Strange Shadow

Changes in the direction of the sun’s light can cast some pretty cool shadows on Earth.

As a total solar eclipse approached, light was observed leaving a crescent-shaped shadow through the leaves of trees, Blair said.

NASA also recommends the use of a pinhole projector to view images of the crescent sun.

These pinhole cameras can also be used as an alternative to wearing safety glasses during the partial phase of the eclipse, Blair said.

“What’s even more impressive is if you have a colander or a big soup spoon with little holes in it, if you pick it up, you’ll get lots of little eclipses,” he said.

Only during a total solar eclipse, a special shadow band is visible a few seconds before the total solar eclipse.

As NASA notes, shadow bands can appear across plain surfaces and look like thin wavy lines that alternate between light and dark.

This effect is similar to the sheen of a swimming pool.

4. Cold climate

Weather during a solar eclipse can change fairly quickly.

According to the University of Dallas, local temperatures could drop by more than 20 degrees near a total solar eclipse.

This is because when the sunlight fades, the temperature begins to drop.

NASA reported that a solar eclipse in Zambia in 2001 caused temperatures to drop by nearly 15 degrees.

5. Windy conditions

In addition to temperature changes, solar eclipses can bring windy weather.

A 2016 study by the University of Reading found that solar eclipse events can increase wind speeds and change wind direction.

8 things to bring when observing a solar eclipse

“When the sun disappears behind the moon, the ground suddenly cools, much like at sunset,” Giles Harrison, a professor at the University of Reading, wrote in a press release.

“This means that as the reduction in air velocity by the surface changes, warm air no longer rises from the ground, causing a reduction in wind speed and a change in wind direction.”

6. Radio interference

Solar eclipse events are known for blocking radio frequencies.

This is caused by a “sudden decrease in the amount of solar radiation reaching Earth’s atmosphere,” NASA said.

“Because the ionosphere contains charged particles (ions and electrons) that are responsible for reflecting and refracting radio waves, changes in the ionosphere can also affect wireless communications and navigation systems,” NASA said in the article. Says.

This change in the ionosphere changes the way radio waves “propagate through the ionosphere,” which can cause signals to fade, be absorbed, or be refracted, according to NASA.

7. Solar Prominence

Solar prominences are rare, but can appear during a solar eclipse.

Spectators wearing appropriate safety glasses may be able to spot the solar corona peeking out from behind the moon’s shadow.

NASA says the effect is similar to the petals surrounding the moon, but the protruding parts are an extension of the sun’s surface in a glowing red plasma loop.

These prominences loop hundreds of thousands of miles into space. Scientists are studying how and why they form.

8. Appearance of other planets

Because the moon blocks the sun’s light, other stars and planets may be visible.

The Planetary Society reported that Venus could appear bright to the right or lower right of the Sun.

Jupiter appears dim, but can be seen to the left or upper left of the Sun.

What appears will depend on local weather conditions, but the brightest objects are most likely to appear, according to Live Science.
