Fort Stewart Soldier’s Bravery

A soldier from Fort Stewart displayed remarkable courage by confronting the alleged shooter, Quornelius Radford, during a tense incident on Wednesday. As Sergeant Aaron Turner faced the 28-year-old suspect, he said his military training instinctively took over.

Initially, Turner aimed to calm Radford and redirect his focus away from targeting the “leadership.” However, as the situation escalated, he knew he had to act decisively to prevent further harm. “I had to take charge by grabbing the weapon and the magazine,” Turner recounted.

“At that moment, my training kicked in. It wasn’t about my safety anymore; it was about ensuring the other soldiers were safe,” he explained.

Before disarming Radford, Turner attempted to engage him in conversation while Fort Stewart was under lockdown for over 40 minutes. “I was asking him, ‘What’s going on?’ I really wanted to understand why he was getting closer to acting on his threats,” he shared.

Radford reportedly responded with statements like, “I’m out of here,” claiming he didn’t intend to harm anyone except leadership figures.

Turner was among six soldiers at Fort Stewart who were recognized with medals for their roles in halting the shooting, which resulted in injuries to five individuals.

While the exact motive behind Radford’s actions remains unclear, he sent a puzzling text to his aunt before the incident, stating, “He’s probably in a better place because everyone loves him and he was trying to do something.”

Two soldiers who had trained with Radford in 2018 mentioned that he often faced ridicule due to a speech impairment. In January, he expressed on Facebook that he was coping with the loss of a loved one and resorted to drinking to numb the pain, according to reports. Additionally, in May, Radford was arrested for a driving infraction in Hinesville, a nearby town.
