New Jersey Gubernatorial Candidate Criticizes Trump’s Approach
On Wednesday, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill criticized President Donald Trump’s methods aimed at curbing crime and illegal immigration in American cities.
During a debate with former Congressman Jack Ciattarelli, a Republican, Sherrill stated, “Military personnel should not be on our streets. They make people less safe,” according to reports.
She further accused the president of illegal troop movements across the nation. “When we see threats nationwide, it’s concerning,” she explained. “Secretary Hegseth recently mentioned using American cities for military training, which is unacceptable. I wouldn’t support that as governor.”
Reports indicate that in August, President Trump mobilized 1,700 National Guard troops to address rising crime and illegal immigration, which had become more pronounced during Joe Biden’s presidency.
In response, Ciattarelli took a jab at Sherrill, claiming her stances reflected a lack of commitment to public safety. He pointed out, “She voted to eliminate qualified immunity, crucial for local law enforcement. Plus, she’s considering reappointing the current attorney general, known for being notably anti-police.”
He assured the people of New Jersey, “As governor, I will create safe communities. We will restore law and order, and there will be consequences for misbehavior.”
An Emerson College poll from September showed Ciattarelli and Sherrill in a statistical tie.
Trump, who backs Ciattarelli, shared a poll from Truth Social praising him as “tough on crime and cutting taxes,” while criticizing Sherrill for her positions on various issues, including support for open borders and recent controversies connected to her voting record.
In the meantime, reports suggested Sherrill faced challenges from both ends of the political spectrum, particularly after revelations about her low poll numbers and alleged connections to a cheating scandal. This situation seemed to spark backlash from a wide range of voters.
