Somali Man on Probation for Sexual Assaults Now Facing Federal Charges

Federal Charges Filed Against Somali Immigrant

The Justice Department announced on Thursday that a Somali immigrant, who came to the U.S. during the Obama administration, is facing federal charges linked to multiple rapes after previously receiving probation from a state court.

Abdimahat Bir Mohamed has been charged with the abduction of a minor and kidnapping, in relation to at least five separate incidents occurring between 2017 and 2025. Previously convicted twice on state rape charges, he received probation in both cases, according to a report from FOX 9 in Minneapolis.

Attorney General Pam Bondi provided details during her appearance on “Fox & Friends” on Friday, stating, “He committed a horrific rape of a child in 2017. In 2024, he committed another rape. Arrested in state court, he has lived in the Minneapolis area all his life. His last name is Mohammed, and he is 28 years old.” Bondi emphasized that Mohamed was convicted of both rapes, yet was allowed to walk free on probation, calling him a “double rapist.”

“Then, under our administration, he committed another rape. He was arrested and remains in federal custody,” she added. Bondi mentioned that additional charges are likely, indicating that police had taken his DNA and matched it against a database of unsolved rape cases.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has begun targeting illegal Somali immigrants in the Minneapolis area, following the uncovering of substantial fraud totaling at least $1 billion, with some funds allegedly funneled to the terrorist group al-Shabaab. Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz acknowledged that the state “attracts criminals” but urged against demonizing Somali residents during his NBC “Meet the Press” appearance.

Bondi hinted that Mohamed might not be the only one facing federal action, suggesting that there are broader implications for how crimes are prosecuted. “We’re finding that many criminals nationwide weren’t adequately prosecuted by liberal state courts, allowing us to bring federal indictments. His DNA is now being checked against a national database,” she remarked, acknowledging that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in this new case.

Bondi recounted the serious nature of Mohamed’s past offenses: “He had entered pleas in the last two cases. The first involved a 15-year-old girl. In the second, he held a woman hostage in a hotel room for an extended period and raped her repeatedly.”
