Somaliland Continues Celebrations for a Second Day as Thousands Honor Trump with American Flags and Fireworks

Somaliland Celebrates Trump’s Recognition for Second Day

In Somaliland, joyous celebrations have erupted for a second day as thousands of people gathered to express their gratitude after President Donald Trump acknowledged their nation as a separate entity within Somalia. The revelry included American flags and fireworks, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

In a video shared on X, numerous Somalilanders were seen congregating in central Hargeisa, their capital, thanking Trump for his remarks. Among the attendees, some were holding an upside-down American flag and dancing joyfully.

Reports indicated that residents have been celebrating since Trump first referred to Somaliland, with images of his face and the American flag projected on various buildings across the region.

Another video highlighted more gatherings in Hargeisa, with attendees expressing their appreciation to Trump for distinguishing Somaliland from Somalia.

During these celebrations, many waved flags and expressed their delight. One individual, Ahmed Abdlahi, remarked on X that if Trump formally recognizes Somaliland, he would be remembered as a leader pivotal in launching Somaliland into a new era. Abdlahi suggested that Somaliland could become “the Taiwan of Africa,” thriving through innovation and economic growth.

The celebrations were sparked by Trump’s supportive comments during a rally, where he stated that Somaliland is “a totally different country” from Somalia. This recognition followed Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi’s recent interview in which he praised Trump as a “great man” and suggested that official recognition of Somaliland could further contribute to history.

Abdullahi added that recognizing Somaliland could play a significant role in global efforts against terrorism and maritime security, emphasizing its strategic importance.

In response to Trump’s statements, the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release confirming that Trump’s comments affirm Somaliland’s sovereignty and its internationally recognized borders, which were established when the nation gained independence.

As outlined in the release, Somaliland gained independence on June 26, 1960, and restored its sovereignty on May 18, 1991. Since then, it has established functioning institutions and conducted multiple elections, underscoring its commitment to democratic governance.

The press release further stated that the Somaliland government is dedicated to maintaining peaceful relations with neighboring countries and resolving any disputes through respectful dialogue. It also thanked President Trump for acknowledging Somaliland as a sovereign state, noting its prior recognition by Israel and partnership with Taiwan. The government looks forward to collaborating with Trump’s administration to enhance positive relations between their nations.
