Some Democrats Suggest Dismantling White House Ballroom: It's 'Dirty'

Democratic Opposition to Trump’s White House Ballroom Project

Some Democrats are so against President Trump’s plans for the White House Ballroom that they even advocate for its demolition.

Trump argues that a banquet hall is essential, particularly after the assassination attempt during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton in April.

Following the incident, Trump stated on Truth Social, “What happened last night is the very reason that our great military, secret services, law enforcement agencies, and presidents over the past 150 years have called for the construction of a large, secure ballroom on the grounds of the White House.” He further claimed that if a secret military banquet hall were being built, the attack could have been prevented.

However, many Democrats are staunchly opposed to the idea. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) described banquet halls as “dirty,” suggesting they are “built with corrupt funds and will always remain dirty.” He expressed skepticism about whether any president who genuinely cares about fighting corruption could maintain such a facility.

Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) even went so far as to propose completely demolishing the hall and selling it off to recover costs, stating, “We’ve got to be prepared to completely clean up every illegal thing that this president has done.” He believes this includes the new structural additions.

Others have suggested repurposing the ballroom for more community-oriented functions. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) mentioned transforming it into a soup kitchen or community center, while former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (D) remarked that future presidents should find a better use for the space.

In May, President Trump spoke about the complexities of the construction project, which he believes is long overdue. He described the ballroom as a “shield” that protects various important spaces, including military hospitals and conference rooms, emphasizing its role in national security.

Trump highlighted the diverse facilities being constructed alongside the ballroom, asserting that they include hospitals and research facilities, all integrated to provide military support. He made a point that the ballroom is designed for tactical advantages, ensuring safety and clear visibility over Washington.

Interestingly, Senator John Fetterman (D-Penn.) dismissed the backlash against the ballroom as a manifestation of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS). He argued that the project, which he insists won’t cost taxpayers, will ultimately benefit future presidents and questioned the hesitation behind the opposition.

Fetterman reflected on the necessity of a secure venue for significant events, especially in light of the recent attempt at the Washington Hilton. He maintained that the facility should be built to prevent similar vulnerabilities in the future.

Trump has stated that the construction is ahead of schedule and funded privately, assuring that no government funds are being used for the banquet hall. He emphasized that the military is developing a complex underneath the ballroom, asserting that the project is progressing well.
