Pennsylvania State Police have arrested a man after finding his elderly mother dead. severely ignored at a home in Upper Chichester Township.
Police said a neighbor called the home on Dresdner Circle on Sunday and said he hadn’t seen the woman in months and noticed a pile of belongings outside her door.
No one answered the door when police conducted a welfare check. They noticed the presence of flies and trash in the house and forced entry out of fear that someone was having an emergency inside the house.
When they entered, they found Daniel Klein, 51, inside and a strong odor coming from the home.
Police asked Klein to check on her mother and found her unconscious under a dirty blanket in the master bedroom of the home.
When medics called by police removed the blanket from Klein’s mother, they found maggots and dried feces. He also said the woman was glued to the bed, another sign of neglect that police called “sheephorn toenails.”
WPVI-TV reported that the scene was so gruesome that at least one police officer wore protective gear to investigate.
Police say Klein is suspected of telling police he was his mother’s sole caregiver. She added that she had been bedridden for several weeks, but police suspect she had been bedridden for months.
Klein was arrested and charged with dependent abuse and reckless endangerment.
The woman was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in critical condition.
Klein was being held on $50,000 bail.
“This is one of the worst cases I’ve seen in my four years as district attorney,” said Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer. “And I simply cannot imagine that this person, Defendant Klein, would do something like this to his own mother.”
A similar incident was reported in Louisiana in 2022, when a couple was arrested after authorities found their severely autistic daughter, Lacey Fletcher, glued to a couch after being neglected for 10 years. Ta. The two men later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were each sentenced to 40 years in prison, but the sentence was suspended for 20 years.
