An Unusual Case of Pension Fraud in Italy

A man who is currently unemployed allegedly impersonated his deceased mother to continue receiving her pension payments, which have reportedly amounted to thousands of euros each year. This peculiar situation is being referred to as the “Mrs. Doubtfire scandal” by Italian officials.

The man, age 56 and whose identity has not been disclosed, supposedly concealed his mother’s mummified body at their family home three years after her passing, as detailed by an Italian newspaper.

His mother, Graziella Dall’Orio, passed away at the age of 82, yet her son failed to report her death. Instead, he placed her body in a sleeping bag, hiding it in the laundry room. It’s quite shocking, really, to think about how long he managed to keep this hidden.

By the time authorities made the discovery, her body had already mummified. During this time, the son found ways to keep cashing in on her pension by mimicking her appearance, even going to the lengths of copying her makeup routine. Apparently, he successfully renewed her identity card at a government office, which I find quite astounding. How did he pull that off?

With a combination of her pension and a portfolio that included three properties, the son managed to earn roughly $61,000 annually, according to the report. It seems he fashioned a “Mrs. Doubtfire-esque makeover” to support his claims, drawing inspiration from the well-known film featuring Robin Williams as a father disguising himself as a caretaker.

Despite his efforts, sharp-eyed officials spotted inconsistencies in his disguise, including his notably male features, such as a deep voice and stocky neck. Eventually, someone alerted the authorities, who then compared photographs of Dall’Orio and her son, leading them to the realization that a deception had taken place. Can you imagine the surprise?

Authorities searched the home, where they uncovered Ms. Dall’Orio’s remains. Fortunately, it seems that there are currently no indications of foul play surrounding her death.

Francesco Aporti, the mayor of Borgo Virgilio, described the entire scenario as both strange and sad, suggesting that she likely died from natural causes; however, an official autopsy is still pending.

As for the son, he faces investigation for potential concealment of a corpse and fraud related to the benefits. It’s unclear whether he has been taken into custody at this point.
