As the WNBA looks for its next commissioner, Sophie Cunningham has shared that she has had several conversations with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who is overseeing the search for the league’s new leader.
“I’ve spoken with Adam Silver a few times. I think he’s a fantastic person—very wise and knowledgeable,” Cunningham remarked to reporters recently. “Just being able to discuss things with him and hear his approach to the NBA is invaluable.”
While Cunningham didn’t offer any thoughts on who might be suitable candidates for the position, she did express confidence that the chosen individual will work towards enhancing the WNBA’s current success.
Cunningham expressed her belief that the new commissioner should prioritize the needs of the players. “The WNBA has always been a safe space for everyone,” she commented. “There are so many different backgrounds represented in the league, which is spectacular. But it’s essential to have someone who can unify everyone because it can be quite diverse.”
“Additionally,” she added, “it’s crucial to have a commissioner who is focused on the players and values a strong relationship with them. I think that’s incredibly important.”
Discussing the dynamics between players and league leadership, Cunningham noted that while disagreements may arise, maintaining open communication and mutual respect is key. “They have a job to do for the owners and will have to make tough decisions. However, if there’s good communication, it just feels different,” she explained.
Cunningham’s remarks come as the WNBA prepares for its first leadership change in seven years. Cathy Engelbert, the league’s inaugural commissioner since 2019, has announced her retirement at the end of 2026 after a lengthy career. Engelbert’s time as commissioner saw significant growth in attendance, viewership, sponsorships, and franchise values.
Engelbert also initiated a plan to expand the league from 12 to 18 teams by 2030 and secured new media rights and collective bargaining agreements. However, her relationship with players has occasionally faced challenges.
