Saturday’s Screencaps

Welcome to another edition of Saturday’s Screencaps. We’re diving into all the happenings from last night while you were perhaps enjoying a night on the patio. “Respect Summer.”

First up, let’s talk about Indianapolis. Sophie Cunningham, after a night with the Fever that ended in a 98-87 victory, had a little fun at Clayton’s Country Bar in downtown Indy. She hopped on the bar and gave an enthusiastic performance of Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue.” Honestly, I don’t think you can appreciate Sophie Cunningham enough.

This isn’t just enthusiasm. She’s someone who, quite frankly, doesn’t seem to care what others, especially critics, think. She’s vocal about her beliefs regarding women in sports and clearly has a love for her country. That might frustrate some, but hey, that’s just how it is.

How did I find out that Sophie ended the night singing her heart out to Creighton? Well, this morning, I got a text from a friend I met during the Big Ten Championship game last December. My buddy Barry Starr and I had wandered into a Hooters one late night. We were just enjoying a couple of beers at the bar when a guy resembling a ZZ Top member sat next to us.

We struck up a chat and I learned he was quite the fan of OutKick and a supporter of Clay Travis. He seemed pretty knowledgeable, and we even tested his knowledge on some OutKick topics—he passed with flying colors.

As luck would have it, this same ZZ Top enthusiast is the one who messaged me with the update about Sophie Cunningham belting out her song late into the night. Kudos to you, Sophie, and cheers to good connections. Let’s just remember how fortunate we are to live in this amazing country.

Saturday Musings

After putting this column together, I’m heading to Dayton, Ohio, to celebrate my father’s 71st birthday. It’s a nice thing, but there’s a catch—thanks to the weather, rain has decided to crash the party. I mean, golf is definitely off the table. The course I usually go to isn’t far from a flood warning area.

This morning’s reports from Dayton mentioned areas along I-70 near the Indiana border could get hit with 2 to 3 inches of rain each hour as those heavy showers roll through. Overall, complete rainfall totals might reach between 3 to 6 inches, which is quite a lot.

But don’t worry—I’ll make sure I turn back if it gets too crazy out there.

On Naming Trends

Here’s an interesting thought from a reader, Phil from Florida: He pointed out that, as a former hiring manager, names that are perhaps misspelled or creatively spelled (like starting with a “K”) tend to catch more attention during interviews. He and others he knows, wouldn’t consider names that are difficult to pronounce—or at least ones that sounded too similar to those mockingly presented in comedy sketches.

A Cautionary Remark

Doug J. shared his thoughts and he seems pretty impressed with some absurdly funny window stickers. And Rory M. issued a warning about stop signs. He noted how getting ticketed for ignoring a stop sign can really hurt your wallet, especially regarding insurance rates. I guess taking those extra moments at a stop sign doesn’t seem so trivial now, huh?

But just a side note: I’m pretty sure Doug, from Springfield, Ohio, isn’t advocating for running stop signs. I think he’s just referring to a quirky moment maybe seen in an empty field post-harvest.

It’s Saturday. That’s all I’ve got for today. Let’s also not forget to stay dry and safe, especially with all this rain lurking around. Turn around if the roads seem dangerous. Let’s cherish these summer days while we can.
