Sophie Cunningham warns those who criticize Caitlin Clark

Sophie Cunningham recently addressed criticisms surrounding second-year Indiana Fever guard Kate Clark, defending her status as a significant player in the WNBA. Cunningham expressed frustration over remarks suggesting that Clark isn’t the “face” of the league. She responded emphatically, saying it’s infuriating when people argue against Clark’s impact. “There’s a lot of talent in our league, but to say she isn’t central to our success is just… well, it’s ridiculous,” she noted.

Reflecting on their time together with the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham recalled how teams often tailored their gameplay to counter Clark’s star power during her rookie year. “In the locker room, it was like, ‘We’re trying to help her understand what the W is about,’ which makes sense for rookies. But, well, it’s her second year; it’s time to step it up,” she shared.

Notably, this isn’t the first time Cunningham has come to Clark’s defense. Earlier this season, she intervened during an on-court incident involving Clark and players from the Connecticut Sun.

Clark herself dismissed the idea that she’s soft, despite facing heavy physicality from opponents. In the past, she indicated that challenges on the court were simply part of being in a competitive environment. “Everyone seems to take it to another level with me. It’s tough, sure, but that’s just how it is,” she remarked.

She added that dealing with aggressive play is just part of professional basketball, acknowledging the intensity of the game. As of now, Clark has played just 13 games this season due to injuries, averaging 16.5 points—slightly below her usual standards for 2025.
