Texas Democrats Flee the State Amid Party Tensions
Notable Democratic financier George Soros and former Texas Representative Beto O’Rourke have significant involvement in the funding of groups that support Texas Democrats as they leave the state. This move is aimed at avoiding Republican votes on a new Congressional map.
O’Rourke’s organization, known as People (PBP), has been instrumental in facilitating the departure of about 50 Democrats to states like New York and Illinois. They provide assistance with travel costs, accommodation, and fines for lawmakers who are absent from legislative sessions. Meanwhile, the Texas Majority PAC, associated with Soros, is reportedly collaborating with a national funding network to arrange further financial support for this strategic delay.
The PBP is actively soliciting donations through its website, pledging that “100% of your contributions will support the Texas Democrats in the fight against Trump’s gaining power.”
Interestingly, requests for comments from the organization went unanswered, as did inquiries directed to Texas Majority PACs.
Texas Democrats Evade Trump-Backed Votes Amid Legislative Controversy
Some Texas Republicans have expressed concerns that Democrats could potentially face legal repercussions if they use political funds to cover daily fines of $500. A 2023 law specifies that such payments cannot be made from funds classified as political contributions.
However, Democrats involved remain confident they are complying with legal standards. Those engaged in fundraising have indicated that they have found legal avenues to support lawmakers financially.
The Texas House Democrat Caucus expressed to the Tribune that “All expenses for this effort are legally paid.”
Legal Battles Escalate Over Congressional Map Redrawing
Governor Greg Abbott has initiated legal action aimed at removing Democrats who he accuses of abandoning their responsibilities. The lawsuit targets Representative Jean Wu, chair of the Texas House Democrat Caucus, alleging violations of the state constitution.
In his statement, Abbott outlined, “Representative Wu and other Texas House Democrats have shown intentional refusals to return home, and their prolonged absence undermines the quorum necessary for the House to conduct business.” He asserted that “Texas House Democrats have abandoned their obligations to Texans, and there must be consequences.”
The Texas Supreme Court has mandated a response from Wu by Friday. While Wu has yet to file court documents, she did make a statement to the press, arguing that her actions are a constitutional obligation rather than participation in partisan activities.
Additionally, the Texas sergeant has been directed to take measures to ensure lawmakers return to their duties, indicating that “arrest warrants may be issued if necessary.”
Trump Suggests Federal Intervention
President Donald Trump has hinted at the possible need for federal law enforcement involvement in getting Texas legislators to return to the state. He stated, “A lot of people are demanding they come back. You can’t sit down. You have to go back. You have to fight that. That’s what elections are all about.”
