Source Of Reason When It Comes To Why Democrats Lost Comes From Unlikeliest Of People: British Economist

The reason the Democratic Party lost so badly in the 2024 election is because it is so disconnected from ordinary Americans, who crave something different from their own politicians.

So claim The New York Times op-ed published on Sunday was written by Daniel Chandler, a British economist at the London School of Economics, who perhaps cannot be expected to provide a complete diagnosis of the Democratic Party's post-election performance. Probably. In his opening paragraph, Chandler perfectly sums up the Democratic Party's biggest flaws: its status as “defenders of the despised status quo” and its inability to “connect with voters who yearn for change.” . Chandler then spent much of the article arguing that the Democratic Party should embrace 20th century political philosopher John Rawls. He argues that one of Rawls's main ideas is “veil of ignorance” is a thought experiment that imagines what society would be like if people didn't know their class, race, or religion. Rawls argued that if we wear a veil of ignorance when designing society, the world will inevitably appear more fair, just, and equal.

If the Democratic Party follows Rawls's core principles of building an economy with equality and prosperity for all, it will eventually have to abandon its current agenda of preserving the status quo and become a pro-working class party. Deaf Chandler insists.

“A party inspired by Rawls would champion an inclusive and tolerant society, a vibrant democracy, equality of opportunity, and just outcomes,” he writes.

“Practically speaking for modern political parties, this means addressing the concerns of non-college voters who have long been ignored, not just for high incomes, but also for meaning, community and social significance. “It's an opportunity to make a difference,” Chandler continues, “and that means committing fully to pro-worker policies.”

The economist also believes the party can achieve justice for women and minorities simply by making welfare programs more universal, rather than creating new programs based on identity.

I'm not here to thoroughly knock Chandler. He's an unlikely or slightly off-topic messenger, but he's on point about why Democrats are losing voters to Republicans.

But there is something absurd and comical about the British philosopher's obscuring of common sense. For example, not creating welfare programs based on race or engaging in identity politics with lofty philosophies.

If anyone knows what to do with working-class Hispanics in the Rio Grande Valley who voted for Donald Trump in this year's election, it's a British academic specializing in the political philosophy of John Rawls. .
