Sen. Darin Graham Advances in South Carolina Senate Primary
According to reports, Sen. Darin Graham has progressed to the runoff in the South Carolina Republican Senate special primary. This primary is to fill the vacancy left by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, who passed away unexpectedly at 71.
Since no candidate achieved over 50% of the votes, Graham will face another contender in the upcoming runoff election. That field includes Rep. Ralph Norman, Rep. Russell Frey, and former governor Mark Sanford. The primary took place a month after Lindsey Graham’s sudden death.
This contest is an important indicator of President Trump’s influence within the Republican Party, particularly given his endorsement of Graham, who is the late senator’s sister. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darin Graham last month to complete the remaining term, which comes to an end this year.
In his remarks, Graham expressed his intention to run partly to aid in passing the agenda of President Trump.
Norman, who recently campaigned for the governor’s position but did not succeed, and Frey, a two-term congressman, are both known Trump supporters and have shown their backing for him in this Senate race.
Mark Sanford, known for his fiscal conservatism, previously ran for the Republican presidential nomination against Trump back in 2020. He has cited national debt concerns as a key reason for his Senate campaign.
Interestingly, backing Trump hasn’t guaranteed success in the traditionally Republican South Carolina. Just recently, in a separate gubernatorial primary, Trump endorsed Pamela Evett, who garnered the most votes but was subsequently defeated by Alan Wilson in the runoff.
The forthcoming runoff election will be telling, with the victor expected to lead against Democratic candidate Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, in the upcoming midterm elections.
