South Carolina Surpassing Texas and Florida in New Residents

South Carolina Outpaces Texas and Florida in Population Growth

While Texas and Florida have received much attention for attracting residents fleeing the high costs of living in blue states, recent data shows that South Carolina is actually experiencing the fastest growth of any state.

Recent statistics indicate that, although Texas and Florida are still top destinations for new residents, South Carolina’s growth is outpacing them significantly. Many people are relocating from states like California and New York, as highlighted by the recent IRS data.

It appears that the migration trend to Southern states is broader than many may realize. People are often looking for lower taxes, more job opportunities, and an improved quality of life.

According to the newly released IRS figures, South Carolina is seeing a remarkable influx of new residents. In fact, it holds the highest per capita rate of newcomers among states, with just over 1% of its population coming from other states. To put it simply, for every 100 individuals in South Carolina, one has moved in from elsewhere. The Palmetto State welcomed over 59,000 new residents between 2022 and 2023.

This demographic shift is not solely about people; it also connects to income dynamics. South Carolina has gained approximately 29,000 new taxpayers, leading to an influx of around $4.1 billion in revenue, which could positively impact the local economy as these new residents increase purchasing power and fill open positions in growing sectors.

Even though Texas and Florida are still drawing the largest numbers of people, the percentage increase in South Carolina is more pronounced. In 2023, Texas welcomed 56,473 new taxpayers, with Florida close behind at 55,349.

Conservative radio hosts, such as Sean Hannity and Buck Sexton, often highlight Florida as an appealing alternative for those dissatisfied with life in New York. Shows like Will Cain on Fox News proudly promote Texas as a live broadcast location.

It seems that the population surge in Southern states has come at a cost to some of the country’s costliest states, where Democrats hold sway over local governance. These states are suffering significant population losses.

Data reveals that California is expected to lose over 100,000 taxpayers from 2022 to 2023, while New York and Illinois will see declines of nearly 72,000 and over 28,000, respectively.

An analysis by the Tax Foundation underscores the significant domestic movements occurring in recent years. Millions of Americans, along with substantial economic resources, are leaving high-tax states in favor of those with more favorable tax conditions and lower living costs. Tax considerations, while not always the main reason for relocation, often factor into individuals’ decisions.

Other Southern states are also experiencing notable migration trends, with South Carolina seeing roughly 29,000 newcomers, Tennessee about 24,000, and Georgia around 15,000 according to IRS data. In the West, Arizona has grown by approximately 17,000 residents, while Colorado added about 11,000.

Several other Democratic-leaning states are also facing population declines, including New Jersey with a drop of 19,000, Massachusetts losing 15,000, and Maryland with nearly 14,000 fewer residents.
