Democrat Senator Switches to Republican in South Dakota

A South Dakota senator, previously a Democrat, announced on Monday that she has officially changed her voter registration to Republican.

“I have switched my voter registration from Democrat to Republican. My name will now appear with an (R) designation,” she stated.

This change leaves five Democrats remaining in the South Dakota legislature, in stark contrast to the 65 Republicans.

Perri Pourier, an Oglala Lakota, suggested that fundamental aspects of the Republican Party align with “the principles of tribal sovereignty.” She pointed out that “the core beliefs of the GOP—like decentralized government, self-determination, and strong public safety—are consistent with the principles of tribal sovereignty.”

Pourier highlighted that, in her view, well-intentioned Democratic reforms often undermine sovereignty. She referenced historical instances, such as the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which she claimed disrupted traditional governance structures and negatively impacted self-sufficiency. “The consequences of such federal policies are still felt in reservations like Pine Ridge today,” she asserted.

Previously, Pourier had encouraged early voting on social media, emphasizing the importance of reproductive rights in the electoral process.
