A search for a new manager at Southampton has led them to consult with Tom Cleverley. Meanwhile, Danny Ruhr, the manager of Sheffield Wednesday, is also in the mix.
After being relegated to the Championship, Southampton is contemplating a rebuild and is said to have identified a small group of potential candidates for the managerial role next season.
Cleverley, recently departing from Watford, is thought to have made a favorable impression during discussions regarding the position. Sources close to the former Manchester United midfielder suggest he may land the role at Southampton. At 35, Cleverley is viewed as one of the more promising young coaches in English football.
Then there’s Still, who has announced he will be stepping away for “personal reasons.” The 32-year-old has expressed a wish to be closer to family following his girlfriend, Sky Sports presenter Emma Sanders, being diagnosed with encephalitis in March.
Still could still find a job when he returns to England, as Southampton is reportedly interested and he remains optimistic that a deal might be reached. However, there’s still more to sort out with his current club before anything can progress. Southampton is also looking at situations involving other coaches, including a 36-year-old German manager from Hillsborough, who may be leaving this summer.
Southampton’s season has been tough; they lost 2-0 to Everton in what was a significant match at Goodison Park. Despite narrowly avoiding a record low points tally in Premier League history, their campaign offered little to celebrate. Russell Martin, who had led them to playoff promotion last season, was dismissed in December after his tactics didn’t work out. Urik, his replacement, failed to bring about any noticeable change after taking over.
