Canyon Fire Moves Quickly Through Southern California

On Thursday, a rapidly spreading fire in Southern California led to evacuation orders as firefighters battled the blaze. The Canyon fire ignited east of Lake Pill in Ventura County and was initially estimated to cover around 50 acres.

Initially burning north of Highway 126, the fire eventually spread into Los Angeles County. Evacuations were mandated in the recreational area surrounding Lake Pill, along with warnings issued for a ranch on the western side of Holther Canyon, as reported by NBC 4.

Los Angeles County also saw evacuation orders and warnings issued in several regions. “The Canyon fire is currently active between Los Angeles and Ventura counties in the Lake Pill area. Multiple zones are under evacuation orders or advisories,” stated the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Fire crews responded with water-dropping aircraft, utilizing Lake Pill, a reservoir situated in the Rospadres National Forest in northwest Los Angeles, to help suppress the flames.

The Canyon Fire is one among at least four active fires in Southern California on that same day. The cause of the fire remains unclear.

This incident follows earlier wildfires that devastated Southern California at the start of the year, consuming over 50,000 acres and causing extensive damage to more than 18,000 homes and structures.

In the wake of ongoing wildfire threats, the situation remains precarious. Reports indicate that at least 30 fatalities have occurred and around 200,000 people have been evacuated due to various fires.

According to NBC 4, over 4,400 wildfires have been recorded in California this year, an increase from the 3,800 reported at this time last year. More than 221,100 acres have been scorched in 2023, significantly more than the approximately 83,200 acres burned by July last year.
