The union representing Southwest Airlines flight attendants voted Tuesday to authorize a strike after its members rejected a contract agreement the union proposed in December.
Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 556 announced For the first time in history, 98 percent of members voted to authorize a strike.union represents Southwest Airlines has more than 15,000 flight attendants across 11 different locations.
“98% YES sends a strong message of solidarity. We will do whatever it takes to win a contract that recognizes our contribution to the success of our company,” the union said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). Announced.
According to the Associated Press, members of TWU Local 556 rejected a contract reached by the union and Southwest Airlines last month. The contract was abolished in a vote with 64% of members opposed.
“We will come back to the table to achieve a collective bargaining agreement that meets the needs of our industry’s hardest-working flight attendants,” union president Lynn Montgomery said in a statement at the time.
