Spain’s Prime Minister Criticizes U.S. and Israel Over Iran Conflict
On Wednesday, Spain’s socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed strong disapproval of the ongoing U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, labeling the situation an “absurd, cruel and illegal” violation of international law.
While addressing Spain’s parliament, he cautioned that the repercussions of this conflict could be “much worse” than those experienced in Iraq, especially after his opponents ridiculed him for his stance on Iranian missiles.
Sánchez pointed out in a speech, delivered in the House of Commons, that the motives behind the war seem to include undermining international law, destabilizing the Middle East, and causing devastation in Gaza.
A consistent critic of U.S. policies, particularly under Donald Trump, Sánchez warned that the unfolding war in Iran has the potential for even more dire consequences than the second Gulf War.
There has been considerable dissent from socialists in Spain regarding the actions of NATO allies, a sentiment that has persisted for several years.
Describing the conflict, which has now lasted for four weeks, he suggested it was ignited to “serve the interests of the usual suspects.” He warned that although it might “end quickly,” the aftermath could transform into “an Iraq-style nightmare” that would impact the entire globe.
The Spanish government is committed to preventing a repetition of such events. It’s clear that this war won’t bring about higher salaries, affordable housing, or improved public services.
And that’s, well, truly unfortunate.
What we really don’t need is another war, especially one that distracts us from crucial economic, social, and environmental goals.
Sánchez accused the U.S. and Israel of initiating this conflict even when a nuclear agreement was near completion, asserting that the deal was rejected unexpectedly and without proper justification.
This criticism followed remarks from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who just a day prior, highlighted a “deep rift” with the U.S. and denounced its military actions as violations of international law.
Steinmeier has called for Germany to seek greater independence from U.S. influence, emphasizing the need for autonomy to prevent overreach in domestic matters.
His stance included describing the Iranian military operations as a “politically disastrous mistake” and a “truly avoidable and unnecessary war” that contravened the principles of international law, which Germany adheres to rigorously.
