Virginia Gubernatorial Election Update

With just over ten days remaining until Election Day, recent polls indicate that the Democratic candidate is narrowly leading in Virginia’s gubernatorial race, while the contests for lieutenant governor and attorney general are quite tight.

Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate and former congressman, is ahead of her Republican opponent, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears, with 52% compared to 43%, as per a Suffolk University poll released Thursday. This election is to fill the seat of the term-limited Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin.

Interestingly, Republican candidate John Reed and Democratic contender Ghazala Hasmi are in a dead heat at 45% each. Meanwhile, Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares holds a slight lead over Democratic challenger Jay Jones, 46% to 42%.

Virginia and New Jersey are the only states conducting gubernatorial elections in the year following a presidential election. This election usually garners significant national interest, and it’s viewed as a preliminary indication of President Donald Trump’s ongoing influence. It’s also a key indicator for the upcoming midterm elections in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Although Spanberger has consistently led in polls since the start of the year, the race has tightened recently, especially following some controversial revelations in the attorney general race.

Jay Jones is under scrutiny due to a troubling document from three years ago where he made extreme comparisons between a Republican colleague and notorious figures like Hitler and Pol Pot. After confirming the authenticity of the email, he issued an apology, but there are mounting pressures from Republicans for him to step down. This situation could be leveraged to shift voter sentiments and compel Spanberger to defend his position.

Polling respondents express dissatisfaction with how things are going in Virginia. However, many also see positive changes under Youngkin’s governance, which may bolster the ruling party’s standing.

Interestingly, Trump’s approval rating is below 40%. This raises questions about potential shifts in voter behavior. While he got favorable responses regarding the recent peace initiatives between Israel and Hamas, Biden’s approval was notably low, only 4%. Moreover, 38% of respondents blame Democrats for the ongoing government shutdown, while 28% hold Republicans responsible; Trump was personally cited by 21%.

David Paleologos, from Suffolk University, noted, “Mr. Spanberger is attempting to secure every Democratic win.” However, he pointed out that the Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor and attorney general are struggling to match Spanberger’s appeal.

A recent poll conducted from October 19-21 shows Spanberger leading among women voters, 57% to 38%, but the difference among male voters is just one point—49% to 48%. Moreover, Spanberger is ahead of Sears by a substantial margin of 87% to 9% among black voters but trails among white voters, 52% to 46%.

Spanberger also significantly outperforms Sears among independent voters by 15 points and has a 19-point advantage among those who have already voted. Early voting in Virginia began on September 19, and reports suggest that nearly a quarter of ballots have already been cast for the governor’s race. The latest survey queried 500 likely voters and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
