Spanish authorities think Liverpool's Diogo Jota was driving fast prior to the deadly accident.

Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident along with his brother last week, was reportedly speeding at the time, according to authorities. The current investigation by the Spanish Civil Security suggests that Jota was driving a Lamborghini when he exceeded speed limits, leading to tire failure and causing the car to veer off the road.

The inquiry hints that Jota was the one behind the wheel, although there hasn’t been a formal statement from police regarding who was driving, whether it was Jota or Andre Silva.

The brothers died in a horrific crash on a Spanish highway near Zamora. Jota was just 28 years old, and his brother was 25. The football world reacted with shock as news of their death spread. Many of Jota’s teammates and members of the Portuguese national team were present at their funeral on Saturday.

During the service, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk paid tribute by carrying a floral arrangement resembling a soccer jersey with Jota’s No. 20 on it. Another Liverpool player, Andrew Robertson, created a similar tribute for Silva’s No. 30. Numerous other football figures, including Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias, attended to show their respects.

Portuguese national team coach Roberto Martinez reflected on the loss at the funeral, expressing the sorrow felt by many. “These are truly sad days,” he commented. “But today, we’ve shown that we are a big, close family. Their spirits will be with us forever.”

Reportedly, the brothers were on their way to catch a ferry from northern Spain to England when the tragedy occurred. In a statement, Liverpool Football Club expressed their deep sorrow over Jota’s passing, asking for privacy for the families involved.

The football community mourned, with Cristiano Ronaldo also sharing his disbelief on social media. “It makes no sense,” he wrote in an Instagram post. He reflected on their time together with the national team and offered deep condolences to the grieving family.

During his time with Liverpool, Jota scored 47 goals in 123 appearances, leaving a lasting impact on the club and its supporters.
