Louisiana Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he would ban biological males from the women's restrooms in Congress after a heated debate over the transgender lawmaker's request.
The controversy erupted after Democratic Representative Sarah McBride of Delaware became the first openly transgender member to be elected to the House of Representatives. Republicans have drafted a bill that would restrict biological males from using women's restrooms.
“I’m not going to let a man into a woman’s private space, period. End of story.
“All single-sex facilities, including restrooms, locker rooms, and locker rooms in the Capitol and the House Office Building, are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,” it reads. statement From Johnson Wednesday.
“It is important to note that each member's office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout Parliament House,” Johnson continued. “Women should be given their own space.”
McBride accused Republicans of “manufacturing a culture war” with the bathroom bill.
“Every day, Americans go to work and treat people with respect who are on different life journeys than our own. We want our members of Congress to mobilize the same kindness,” a transgender lawmaker said on social media. I hope so,” he said on social media.
Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina proposed the bill and has been vocal in her opposition to allowing biological males into women's restrooms.
“I'm not going to allow biological males to enter women's private spaces. I'm on the verge of people on the radical left who think it's okay to have penises in women's changing rooms, bathrooms, and toilets. I’m going to stand up and get in the way of the locker room,” Mace told reporters.
“No way! I'm not going to put up with that,” she continued. “This is no good. I'm a rape survivor, I'm a sexual abuse survivor. I'm not going to let a man into a woman's private space. Period. End of story.”
The controversy also led to apparent death threats against Mace on social media by a person who identifies as transgender.
