House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is scheduled to speak at a news conference in Eagle Pass, Texas, on Wednesday. Eagle Pass has become a vast makeshift campground as a record surge of migrants cross the U.S. southern border.
Mr. Johnson is leading a delegation of about 60 Republicans to the Texas border city. Like many members of his party, he supports a hard line on restricting immigration.
A Republican border bill passed by the House last summer was rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate. He recently told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York that aid to Ukraine must be tied to approval of the House bill.
Meanwhile, criticism of President Biden's aggressive border policies has become a central focus of his Republican challengers' campaigns. The most important is former President Trump, the clear Republican front-runner and a longtime fierce opponent of permissive immigration policies.
