Speaker Johnson Gave Me Commitment that Ukraine Aid Will Get a Vote

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Nebraska) told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that he received a “promise” from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) that aid to Ukraine would get a vote in the House. He said that he was given.

Host Kristen Welker talked about aid to Ukraine and said, “The Senate introduced a bill months ago, but it stalled in the House.”

“There wasn’t a lot of support for bicameralism, at least on the Republican side,” Bacon said. “Why? We’ve had about $30 billion in humanitarian aid, but we don’t have a huge track record of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. The EU has much more. We think we should be able to do it. They just gave $50 billion in humanitarian aid, and Germany is doing even more. We think our role was more military aid. Because that’s what we’re good at. I’m optimistic that we’ll get it done within two weeks. I want to make sure it’s bicameral, because even if we send the bill to the Senate, we’ll see where it goes. That’s because I don’t want them to go, and that’s my biggest concern. I have a promise to the chairman and the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee that I will bring this to the floor and vote on it.”

“He made a commitment and hearing it here is important,” Welker said.
