Speaker Johnson points out what is missing in Biden’s apology for calling Laken Riley’s accused killer an ‘illegal’

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) on Sunday scolded President Joe Biden for flattering the liberal speech police.

In his State of the Union address last Thursday, Biden called Jose Ibarra, the Venezuelan immigrant charged with killing Laken Riley, an “illegal offender.” The moment upset Democrats, who believe the adjective is dehumanizing. The next day, Biden It looked like he was protecting himself. Ibarra pointed out that he “technically shouldn’t have been here.”

But on Saturday, Biden capitulated, telling MSNBC anchor Jonathan Capehart that Ybarra is an “illegal alien.”

“I shouldn’t have used ‘illegal.’ It’s ‘undocumented,'” Biden said, acknowledging he “regrets” calling Ybarra “illegal.” .

“I don’t mean to disrespect these people,” Biden said of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. “They built this country. They’re the reason our economy is growing.”

This is a notable moment for several reasons.

First, remember that Democrats are offended by Biden’s use of the word “illegal.” It wasn’t I was angry that Biden trashed Riley’s name. During his SOTU address, he said Riley’s first name was “Lincoln.”

Now, instead of expressing regret that Reilly was murdered and that his immigration policies may have contributed to her death, Biden is calling out progressive Democrats and others for having Reilly killed. He appeals to virtue in order to appease the person being treated. Of course, this is exactly what House Republicans and 37 House Democrats decided last week.

Biden, on the other hand, did not apologize for defaming Riley’s name. it made her mother angry.

Therefore, Johnson said, Biden’s apology is “disgraceful.”

“The president is cowering in his own camp and showing respect to someone who has no value,” the speaker said. “This man is an illegal immigrant who brutally murdered Laken Riley. President Biden should apologize to Laken’s family. What an embarrassment.”

But Biden has not apologized to Riley’s family for getting their daughter’s name wrong or for letting the border crisis escalate instead of easing it. Indeed, the silence is deafening.

Meanwhile, the White House is already working on damage control.

Monday, spokeswoman Olivia Dalton said. claimed The reason Biden did not apologize for using the word “illegal” was because he “used a different word,” and that Biden did not specifically say “sorry” or “apologize.” It seems to be pointing.

But someone should lend the White House a dictionary, since Mr. Biden “expressed regret and acknowledged mistakes and misconduct” in his interview with Mr. Capehart. This is the textbook definition of “apology.”
