Speaking tongues or nonsense? Rebutting bad TikTok theology

Speaking in tongues is a spiritual act and a gift given to believers by the Holy Spirit. And the video of followers speaking in tongues is rounded in Tiktok.

But after watching one video of a young woman recording herself praying in tongues, Ally Beth Stucky “Friendly” is not convinced that sharing this gift publicly and online is a Bible move.

“How this is done on social media is not biblical at all, and I think it’s very dangerous for those who actually see it,” explains Stucky. “This is simply not empowered by the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit will always agree with God’s Word.”

“Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Equal men of all the Trinity. They do not contradict each other, and the whole Bible is God’s unpopular, unique word,” she continues.

Not only does Stucky believe it is not the Bible, but he doesn’t know if she will buy it as the real thing.

“My own personal observation is that it doesn’t actually sound like language. It sounds like Givrisch said it in a rhythmic way,” Stucky says. “I don’t know what her heart is about, but this is probably a performance posted to Instagram to get some likes.

“Maybe she believes she is actually showing others the way she prays or encourages others, but what she is doing doesn’t match the Bible instructions we were given,” she continues.

“We should all agree that watching a video like this and filming ourselves and posting it for the world to see is not in line with what Jesus says in Matthew 6:5-6,” she adds.

Matthew 6:5-6 reads: “When you pray, you should not be like a hypocrite. They say that they may be seen by others because they love standing in synagogues or street corners. Really, they’ve received a reward for you.

“If you look at what Jesus is saying, and the context of the person he is talking about, his point is that his point is that prayer is not a performance of someone else. It’s not what we do to prove ourselves, prove to be holy, to like or get affirmation.”
