Special Counsel Will Not Seek Expedited Hearings in Donald Trump Case

Special Counsel Jack Smith has reversed course after trying to speed up the case against former President Donald Trump in Washington, DC.

Smith asked for a hearing to determine what actions Trump is alleged to have taken that could be prosecuted in the election interference lawsuit against the president.

The Supreme Court’s July 1 ruling that presidents enjoy partial immunity for actions taken while in office prompted Smith to change his approach.

Before Smith eased off on his latest move to fast-track the increasingly volatile case, Judge Tanya Chutkan had scheduled hearings in the fall to determine which of Trump’s actions were chargeable official conduct.

That decision will be made after the election – if it happens at all.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chang released the following statement to Breitbart News:

The witch hunt against President Trump by comrade Kamala Harris and the unscrupulous Joe Biden is collapsing, just like their failed election campaign, and should be dismissed in its entirety in light of the Supreme Court’s historic ruling on immunity and other important legal precedents. It is now clear to all that dangerous liberal Democrats like Kamala Harris have weaponized the justice system against their biggest political opponents to interfere in our elections. The lies of the liberal legal battle against President Trump have exploded in spectacular fashion. Team President Trump will continue to fight and defeat the hoax at every turn. Only President Trump and J.D. Vance can save our Constitution and Make America Great Again.

Chutkan is expected to announce his future course of action at a hearing on September 5th.

Chutkan’s lawsuit against Smith and Trump continues to struggle: Smith’s appointment itself was ruled unconstitutional by a Florida court.

If Trump wins the presidential election, Smith’s lawsuit — and his appointment — would almost certainly come to an end.
