Special prosecutor in Karen Read case criticizes 'campaign of intimidation and abuse' by her supporters

Special Prosecutor Critiques Intimidation Tactics Following Verdict

On Monday, the special prosecutor for Karen Reed’s case issued a forceful statement denouncing the “intimidation and abuse campaign” associated with her supporters.

Hank Brennan, who stepped in after Reed’s initial trial ended in controversy, expressed disappointment over the lack of additional suspects identified in the death of 46-year-old John O’Keefe.

Brennan stated he felt “disappointed” that his team “failed to achieve justice” for O’Keefe’s family.

“District Attorney Michael Morrissey assigned me to this case, granting me complete discretion to investigate independently and pursue the evidence wherever it led,” he noted.

In his statement, he emphasized that neither the concluded federal investigation nor his independent review uncovered other suspects linked to O’Keefe’s death.

During the trial, Reed was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter, although she was found guilty of lesser charges related to drunk driving.

“The unfolding campaign of intimidation and abuse, promoted through public and social media, stands in stark opposition to justice,” Brennan continued.

He expressed concern that such conduct undermines the integrity of the judicial system, impacting both victims and offenders.

In the days following the verdict, several judges expressed that they faced challenges in determining if Reed’s actions constituted partial murder due to “poor investigations.”

The case garnered national attention, with Reed’s supporters rallying around her. They even adopted sign language to show their solidarity.

Throughout the trial, crowds gathered outside the courthouse in Needham, Massachusetts, eager for a glimpse of Reed.

After the not guilty verdict was announced, her supporters welcomed her with enthusiasm, while the grieving O’Keefe family looked on in sorrow.

Reed, seemingly unfazed, made a pointed statement, asserting that she fought diligently for justice on behalf of John O’Keefe during the trial.

“No one fought harder for justice for John O’Keefe than me and my team,” she told the court.

Prosecutors alleged that Reed had left O’Keefe, who was found dead in the snow during a snowstorm, after leaving a party while intoxicated.

The defense, however, argued that Reed was merely a scapegoat, suggesting a police conspiracy against her.

Friends of O’Keefe, McCabe and Albert, who were key witnesses, expressed their belief that the verdict represented a “miscarriage of justice.”

“Today, we mourn for John’s family and are disheartened by the harsh reality that the prosecution was tainted by a web of falsehoods and conspiracy surrounding Karen Reed, her defense team, and the media. This ultimately led to a catastrophic miscarriage of justice,” they stated.
