Special prosecutor seeks to limit Karen Read’s opening in murder retrial

The special prosecutor, appointed to the front of Karen Reed’s second murder trial, accused of murdering Boston police officer boyfriend John O’Keefe, asked the court on Friday to stop his police officer or one of his dogs from guilty in an opening statement next week.

In a two-letter move just days before the retrial begins with the opening statement, specially appointed assistant district attorney Hank Brennan allegedly the defense would use a photo of the injury on O’Keefe’s right arm.

“The federation will move in search of an order that attorneys refrain from claiming in the opening statement in the opening statement that either the victim’s injuries were caused by a person or animal inside the home of 34 Fairview Road,” he wrote. “Based on the defense’s request to show a scuff on the victim’s arm in a public statement, the federation points out that the court has awarded the defense, preventing it from establishing a viable basis before establishing any enrollable evidence and references to third party perpetrator claims and references to third party perpetrator claims related to exclusion.
