Spencer Jones might eventually cool off, but that day isn’t here just yet.
The rising Yankees talent continued his incredible run, hitting three home runs in just three at-bats during a game for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, bringing his total to 13 home runs in 19 games since moving up from Double-A.
Jones seems to be heading toward what could be considered “out of control” status as the July 31 trade deadline approaches, assuming the Yankees think any part of this hot streak is legitimate. If not, the 24-year-old outfielder is simply boosting his trade value as that date nears.
Of course, if the Yankees decide to keep him through the deadline and he keeps performing well, a new question might arise: Is he forcing his way onto the major league roster?
However, given the way the Yankees are structured right now, it looks tough for him to find playing time. With Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger covering center field—where Jones has primarily played—and Bellinger alongside Jackson Dominguez in left, it’s a crowded outfield.
There’s talk that the Yankees might be willing to consider a trade involving Dominguez for the right return, but that feels uncertain.
Scouts have noted that Jones has made strides in fixing his swing this season. They observed improvements during spring training and early games, with one scout commenting that he now resembles Aaron Judge in his mechanics.
“He’s made some fantastic adjustments this year,” an NL scout remarked this week. “He’s focused more on getting solid hits instead of just trying to pull everything, blending his strength and athleticism into his game.”
The Yankees might add one or two new relievers by 6:01 p.m. next Thursday.
Regardless of what they manage to secure in this potential deal, getting Jonathan Loáisiga back on track is crucial for optimizing their bullpen.
This right-hander currently has a 4.91 ERA and has surrendered seven home runs in 25⅓ innings. He hasn’t been the most reliable option in late-game situations lately, but the Yankees are somewhat limited in alternatives. Other pitchers like Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and Tim Hill aren’t available for high-pressure innings every game.
“We really need [Loáisiga] to get things sorted out, especially given the recent strain on our bullpen,” manager Aaron Boone stated. “We need to place him where he can succeed, focusing on his command to help him improve.”
