Spencer Pratt Critiques Los Angeles Architecture
Spencer Pratt has expressed a desire to eliminate what he refers to as “communist brutalists” from Los Angeles’s skyline.
The former mayoral candidate took to social media on Tuesday to criticize what he describes as “sloppy construction” in the city’s architecture.
He posted, “One of the hallmarks of communism is its exaltation of ugliness. If you look at the architectural splendor of Depression-era Los Angeles, it’s a stark contrast to the drab and uninspired brutalism we see today.”
Pratt went on to mention his support for a political candidate who promises to penalize architects he feels are responsible for this perceived decline in aesthetic quality. He drew a comparison between the Eastern Columbia Building, an iconic Art Deco structure completed in 1930, and a more modern building known as the (W)Rapper office tower in Culver City.
The Eastern Columbia Building is celebrated for its unique design, made of reinforced concrete and adorned with glossy turquoise and gold tiles, according to the LA Conservancy.
On the other hand, Pratt criticized the (W)Rapper office tower, which features a haphazard design that lacks the symmetry and harmony he admires in the Eastern Columbia Building. He remarked, “This ugliness poisons the soul. How can you take pride in where you live if you don’t even want to look at it? It feels like a reminder of a tragedy.”
In contrast, he praised the Eastern Columbia Building, highlighting its rapid construction during a challenging economic time as an example of human resilience and creativity. “Breathtaking architecture attracts us, inspires us, motivates us to achieve great things,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the architect of the (W)Rapper office tower, Eric Owen Moss, has defended his design, claiming that it fosters creativity and entrepreneurship by encouraging variation in architectural form.
Pratt, however, dismissed this argument, expressing his belief that Art Deco should be the defining style of Los Angeles. “Our most beloved buildings are all Art Deco. We can choose to embrace this magical heritage rather than surrendering to a bland aesthetic,” he concluded.
Despite his recent loss in the mayoral primary election, Pratt remains committed to advocating for the city and has made claims about possessing video evidence that could potentially lead to resignations among current officials, although he has yet to share this material.
