Spencer Rattler Secures First NFL Win with Saints
It took quite a while—about 11 games, to be precise—but Spencer Rattler, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, finally snagged his first win in the NFL.
The journey to this victory was rather bumpy. Despite participating in several close contests, Rattler couldn’t capture that elusive sense of achievement until the New York Giants visited Caesars Superdome last Sunday. The Giants, fresh off their first season win, were riding high, primarily due to the success of Jackson Dart, who had a notable debut in Week 4.
However, Rattler quickly took command of the game, guiding the Saints to a 26-14 triumph. A significant part of that success stemmed from a formidable defensive performance.
On the field, Rattler completed 20 of 30 passes for a total of 225 yards. Notably, he connected on an impressive 87-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Rashid Shaheed. This occurred shortly after the Giants established their dominance with two touchdown drives, the latter capped off by a pass to tight end Theo Johnson.
While Shaheed’s touchdown narrowed the gap to 14-13, the momentum appeared to sway back to the Giants when New Orleans kicker broke groupe missed a field goal attempt. But things shifted dramatically for the Giants when Dart’s throw to Darius Slayton led to a fumble, with the Saints seizing the opportunity.
Once the Saints recovered that critical fumble, Groupe converted a field goal before halftime, establishing a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The second half proved disastrous for the Giants’ offense. Four consecutive drives ended in turnovers. A fumble by Dart started the spree, followed by another from Cam Scottebo, which Jordan Howden returned for a touchdown, pushing the Saints ahead to 26-14.
Desperate to mount a comeback, Dart threw an interception, adding to the team’s frustration.
This victory marked not only Rattler’s first win but also Coach Kellen Moore’s initial success in his new role. Both teams are now looking at a 1-4 record five weeks into the season.
In terms of receiving, Shaheed led the Saints with four catches totaling 114 yards, while Chris Olave added seven receptions, contributing 59 yards to the effort.
