With the government looming on Congress, Republicans largely united behind the pitch of President Donald Trump and Mike Johnson (R-La.) and passed a clean, continuing resolution.
The CR text has not been finalized, but House Republicans have stepped out of the closed door meeting with a positive outlook.
As first reported by Blaze News, fiscal conservatives and members of the House met with Coach Russell Vought and the top offices of other top office management and budget staff on Monday night. Optimism was carried Wednesday afternoon when the same Republican met up with Trump and heard his pitch on a clean CR.
“There's overwhelming support for supporting the president's agenda, moving forward, giving space to Doge and Elon Musk, and giving Russ Vought and OMB room to reach the American people.”
“We run out of government funds next week and Democrats are threatening to shut down the government. But I will work with Republicans in the great family and work together on an ongoing resolution to fund the government until September, giving us the time we need to tackle our agenda.” I said With a true social post after the meeting.
“Conservatives will love this bill because this year we are setting us up to reduce the taxes and spending of the settlement while effectively freezing it and allowing us to continue working,” Trump said. “It's extremely important – let's get this bill done!”
The advantage of a clean CR is that it will continue to drive momentum, while government shutdowns will curb it.
“I try to convince as many colleagues as possible that if this is the tool the president needs, we really have one generation opportunity.”
“if [Trump] HFC Chairman Andy Harris (R-Md.) told Blaze News that he believes that clean CR, aerial quotes, is the way clean CR is the way to go for the rest of the year.
“It's going to be a heavy lift with some conservatives. That's what they said about budget settlements and increased debt rise. But I think we can achieve this heavy lift,” Harris added. “We'll need some work next week.”
To Harris' point, going through a clean CR with such a slim Republican majority would probably be a heavy lift. When it comes to settlements, Republicans could only lose one vote, but Johnson still managed to pull it off.
“I try to persuade as many colleagues as possible. If this is the tool the president needs, we really have the opportunity “once in a generation”,” Harris said. “Because the alternative is to deal with the Democrats.”
Another CR skeptic of the past, Republican Rep. Chip Roy (Texas), also stepped away from the closed door meeting with a positive outlook.
“There's overwhelming support to support the president's agenda, move forward, give room for Doge and Elon Musk, and give room for Russ Vought and OMB room for Americans to give birth,” Roy told the news agency Wednesday following a meeting with Trump.
Roy claimed that a clean CR would freeze spending at current levels. “This makes sure we keep our spending down,” Doge and its Capitol Hill Allies continue to identify areas of fraud, waste and abuse.
For other spending skeptics like Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett, the ongoing Doge-style cut is unnegotiable to secure a vote.
“I see it in an advantageous way, but that doesn't mean I'll vote for it.”
Burchet, who has historically died during the spending battle, told Blaze News that so far he has “not been much inspired” by the Republican clean CR pitch.
“If they were going to add a cut from the doge, I could have tilted that direction,” Burchet told Blaze News. “We've been chosen to do some things. Doge is doing that. I think we should take it out for the vote and see what happens.”
But even with provisions codifying Doge Cuts, Burchett says it may not be enough to just sway the vote in the CR's favor.
“I see it in a favorable way,” Burchet told Blaze News about Doge-style CR. “But that doesn't mean I'll vote for it.”
Just like the settlement, Republicans operate with incredibly narrow margins. Johnson can afford to lose only one GOP vote. This is likely to be billed by Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massey. With the odds appear to be piling up against them, we need to wait to see if Republicans can pull off another legislative miracle.
