Spotify Takes a Stand Against AI “Artists”

Spotify is officially setting boundaries in response to the increasing presence of AI-generated music.

On Tuesday, the streaming giant announced that starting in mid-September, it will begin labeling accounts that create AI-generated music as “AI personas.” This label will distinguish these profiles within the app and in search results.

These AI accounts will also be excluded from Spotify’s algorithmic recommendations, which users often rely on for new music discovery.

Led by Daniel Ek, Spotify intends for profiles to disclose if they are AI personas voluntarily. If a profile does not make this clear, human moderators will review and label it using the company’s AI tools.

“Genuine connections between artists and fans rely on trust and authenticity,” Spotify stated. “For listeners, that means they should be able to trust that the artist is who they claim to be, especially in today’s world of generative AI.”

This move is part of broader efforts to tackle the influx of AI-generated accounts that have overrun streaming platforms in recent times.

In April, Spotify introduced a badge for human artists to signify they are “verified by Spotify.” New features were also added to help listeners understand how artists incorporate AI into their music and provide clarity on each artist’s contributions to a track.

“Listeners have expressed that they are frustrated by profiles that seem human but turn out to be AI-generated,” Spotify noted. “The badge will inform users that the artist’s identity is fake, created by AI, and doesn’t represent a real person.”

Interestingly, while Spotify enforces these measures against AI artists, it is also integrating AI technology into its platform. This includes bans on unauthorized voice impersonation and efforts to filter out mass uploads of spam content.

Last month, Spotify unveiled a ChatGPT-like feature that allows users to interact with a conversational AI assistant to better find their desired music.

Additionally, through a licensing deal with Universal Music Group, Spotify launched an “AI DJ” feature that lets fans remix or cover songs using AI.

Furthermore, Spotify is collaborating with UMG and other music companies like Warner Music Group and Sony to create “responsible AI products.”
