Wife of Accused Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Stands by Her Husband
Asa Ellerup, the wife of Rex Heuermann, who has been accused of being the Gilgo Beach serial killer, expressed her unwavering support for her husband, calling him her “hero.” In a revealing interview for the upcoming Peacock documentary series, *The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets*, the 61-year-old emphasized her belief that he is innocent.
“I know what he can do,” she shared on the show. “I’ve heard things from another man, but it wasn’t my husband. They’ve got the wrong guy.” Her strong conviction reveals a deeply personal view, seeming to dismiss the serious allegations against Heuermann.
Heuermann, a prominent architect, was arrested in July 2023 for the cold-blooded murders of three young sex workers. Suffolk County prosecutors later linked him to the murder and dismemberment of four other victims.
The evidence stacked against him is substantial, including DNA matches with all the victims, and even hair samples belonging to the couple’s daughter, Victoria. Yet, Asa Ellerup clings to her belief in her husband’s innocence.
Originally from Iceland, Ellerup recounted meeting Heuermann when she was 18. She described him as “tall, dark, and handsome,” and noted that they quickly developed a bond. Their relationship evolved over time, transitioning from friendship to romance, and they had their daughter a year later.
Ellerup shared her struggles as well, mentioning tragic personal events, like undergoing a double mastectomy. “He’s my hero,” she said, recalling moments when Heuermann was always there for her.
Despite the gravity of the situation, she expressed a mix of emotions. On one hand, she has filed for divorce—allegedly to safeguard her assets—but has maintained communication with Heuermann from behind bars. “I get nervous when I visit him,” she admitted, likening the experience to a first date.
In the documentary, she dismissed some of the evidence against her husband, including disturbing content reportedly found in their home. Regardless, she affirmed her support for the legalization of prostitution while insisting that Heuermann never solicited sex workers.
Ellerup, who married Heuermann in Sweden in 1995, conveyed her emotional turmoil. “People ask why I didn’t know my husband was a serial killer. I pick him up from the station every day,” she said, grappling with the disbelief surrounding the allegations.
One small complaint she humorously mentioned was her distaste for his new haircut. Yet, through all of this, her feelings remain conflicted. “I want to say I love him, no matter what,” she expressed. “But how can I believe he did this?”
